Teenager Lauren MacKenzie celebrated her first team debut with Southampton’s winner at high riding Teddington – the victory lifting the city girls to fifth place in South Women’s League Division 3B.
MacKenzie’s magic moment came shortly before half-time, being handily positioned on the far post to finish off a threesome move between Emma White, Sue Merry and Abi Woodcock. “There was a tense bit of ping-pong off the keeper’s pads before Lauren forced the ball home, but we were all delighted for her,” said Sue Merry. This was a creditable result for Southampton, who drove to second placed Teddington minus four regular starters and with goalkeeper Charlotte Pulford also making her debut. “The second half was all about digging deep and working hard for each other, “ Merry added. “We did this and managed to keep a clean sheet and finish the game 1-0 up. It really was an excellent team effort and getting back to winning ways was so important.” Fareham, meanwhile, crashed 4-0 at Guildford, who have leapfrogged Teddington in the log. Steve Lemon’s girls lie fourth from bottom.
