Southampton went goal crazy, rattling 13 goals past Addiscombe and HAC – and boosting Romsey’s Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division 2 survival hopes in the process.
They beat Addiscombe 6-2 and HAC 7-1, prompting some unwanted dents in their opponents’ goal differences in the bargain. Addicombe and HAC lie just above Romsey in the R2 danger zone. Brimming with confidence after reaching England Hockey’s Vase final – they play at the Lea Valley Olympic Park on April 29 – Southampton swept into a 5-0 half-time lead against a bemused Addiscombe, with Simon Watson (2), Rob O’Brien, George Watling and Josh White all on target. Watson completed his first hat-trick of the season in the second half The rearranged game against travelling HAC gave Southampton an opportunity to work on their Vase final plans and, after banging hard on the visitors door, they eventually took a 2-0 lead through Matt Wood and O’Brien. Southampton switched tactics after the break – and nailed the Artillery Company with a five-goal broadside. O’Brien went on to complete his hat-trick – and finish the season with a 24-goal tally – while Watling, Liam Eastwood and Watson also got in on the scoring act.
