Ros Wellington scored the second half winner which enabled Southampton ladies to beat neighbours Fareham 1-0 and double their winning start to the South Women’s League Division 3B campaign.
Fresh from their single-goal opening win at Lewes, Southampton enjoyed a competitive midweek training session and bossed the opening 20 minutes or so without reward. Fareham were held 1-1 by Wimbledon in their opener, but were unable to convert their late first half pressure. The visitors maintained the momentum after the break, but found themselves trailing when a quick free-hit in the attacking 23 yards saw Sue Merry d rive into the circle and hit a reverse stick shot which the Fareham ‘keeper saved. But Ros Wellington pounced to score the goal to give Southampton a well-deserved victory. “The superb work rate of the whole team defined the performance and earned the win,” said Sue Merry.
