A HOBBLING Ben Barnes emerged from the substitutes dug-out at Henry Cort to score Fareham II’s penalty flick winner against Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division 1 rivals Reigate Priory.
Fareham’s head coach had been drafted into service as none of the bench players from the West Conference victory over Cheltenham was eligible to play. “That left us numerically short, so I had to get the boots back on,” Barnes chuckled. Fareham found themselves trailing but turned round 2-1 up through a Paul Metcalf penalty stroke and a second goal from teenager Kieran Paige. Reigate levelled again at 2-2, but Barnes put his know how to good use late on to hit Fareham ’s winner from a penalty flick. “It was a terrific win. We were well down on numbers, so gave a number of youngsters a crack and emerged winners,” Barnes beamed.
