Laura Anning’s first goal of the season – a penalty corner conversion with 15 minutes left on the clock – enabled table topping Trojans to kick start the second phase of their England Hockey Western Women’s Conference play-off push with a 1-0 win at Olton & West Warwicks.
The goal, which enabled Trojans to avenge an earlier 2-1 defeat by the West Midlanders’ at Stoneham lane, followed a splendid run by Imogen Lea, who sped past the Olton defence to force a penalty corner. A straight shot from the top of the D by Gemma Darrington was deflected on to the end of Anning’s stick – and into the Olton net. Trojans enjoyed substantial possession during the game, working the ball up and down the pitch and generally controlling the pace of the game. As the game played on, the hockey became more fluid with both teams making some good passes and creating numerous opportunities. Calm and composed on the ball, Trojans remained patient, although when called upon goalkeeper Mel Insall made a number of key saves and in the process claimed the MVP award. The 1-0 win maintained Trojans’ two-point lead over Stourport, who won 1-0 at Gloucester City. * Laura Anning (above) pictured by James Newell/Daily Echo.
