Winchester Ladies' prospects of lifting the Hampshire Women's League championship are dangling by a thread.
Victory in their final match against Haslemere would have clinched it - and a place in South League Division 3B last term - but they lost 2-0 to the Surrey club, their first defeat of the season. Now Haslemere are hot favourites for the crown and will be champions if they beat sixth-placed Romsey at Southampton University's Wide Lane ground on Thursday evening, 8pm. Winchester were on the offensive from the off at Kings' but found themselves trailing to a Rebecca Mitchell penalty corner at half-time. The second half produced end-to-end hockey, with two Haslemere players yellow carded, reducing the visitors to nine. But with the game on a knife-edge Haslemere converted another short corner through Alice Toynton and will packing the celebratory champagne in the car boot for the trip to Wide Lane.
