Lou Hopkins notched a hat-trick before Sue Merry converted a penalty stroke to give Southampton a 4-1 win at South Women’s League Division 3B strugglers Chichester – the perfect tonic for this Saturday’s Sports Centre high noon showdown with joint leaders Eastbourne.
Chichester have yet to win a game, but refused to roll over easily even after a defensive slip let in Hopkins to link up with Zoe Stride and give Southampton the lead. The second goal came from a strong midfield play between Ros Wellington and Nat Romain. Stride’s shot was saved by the keeper, but Hopkins was on hand at the left post to make it 2-0. Chichester managed to claw a goal back before half-time, but soon after Lauren Carter set up Hopkins for her hat-trick goal and before the end Sue Merry made it 4-1 from the penalty spot to complete the scoring.
