Brave Chichester sunk by late Havant goals

Picture
Havant's Matt Cox (5 green) launches an attack against his old club (Neil Marshall)
Two goals in the last eight minutes gave Havant a slightly flattering 5-3 win over Chichester, who levelled on three separate occasions before conceding a Western Conference derby defeat.
The result moves Havant up into fourth position in the league table on nine points.
It was Charlie Stubbings who scored Havant’s first in the fifth minute. Teenager Ethan Hoddle’s deflected shot was saved by Chichester keeper Chris Bristow, but the rebound fell into the path of Stubbings, who hit the ball high into the netting.
It only took Chichester two minutes to level the score after Maciej Pacanowski had made a save, but the ball got stuck under his body and whilst he tried to clear the ball to safety Alex Baxter reacted quicker than anyone else to equalise.
After end- to-end hockey Havant won their first penalty corner in the 18th minute, which resulted in the lead being restored. Bristow dived low on his right hand post, saving the initial shot but pushed the ball into Chris Smith, who had run towards the goal having injected the corner, Chris made no mistake with the finish.
Chichester constantly looked dangerous and it was clear why they had scored so many goals so far this season.
They narrowly missed the goal with a shot in the 20th minute and were effective at deflecting the ball into the opposition circle for forwards to run onto.
Such a routine lead to Chichester’s first penalty corner in the 22nd minute, which was saved by Maciej. A few minutes later they won a second short corner after a rash tackle and again this was defended well, firstly by Maciej and then by Craig Duffy.
As the first half was coming to the end Havant had a couple of good circle entries, but it was Chichester who scored an equaliser with two minutes left on the clock.
A defensive error gifted Chichester the ball on the top of the circle and Charlie Gibbons made no mistake sending the teams into half time on level terms 2-2.
Chichester started the second half on the front foot, but it was Charlie Stubbings who restored Havant's lead in the 41st minute.
His reverse shot from the left hand side of the circle rocketed into the side netting of Bristow's goal.
Again Chichester were not to be denied and on the 52nd minute Charlie Gibbons touched the ball home round Maciej on the far post, after a good Chichester build up down the left and a centre into the circle.
At 3-3 it was anyone’s game with end-to-end hockey producing opportunities at both ends of the pitch.
Havant won their second penalty corner in the 62nd minute when Jack Stubbings was fouled in the circle, his retaliation earning a five minute yellow card. The resulting corner was converted by Federico Bertoni with an outstanding flick giving Bristow no chance.
Chichester won two late penalty corners that were both saved by Maciej and in a last ditch move for another equaliser Chichester changed Bristow for a kicking back, which back fired when Miguel Rodrigues found the empty net in the last minute of the game.
