1/10/2017 1 Comment SUPER 6s: FAREHAM MAKE NATIONALSTen-goal James Seager led the way as Fareham finished in third place in Division 2 South in England Hockey's prestigious indoor sixes tournament in Canterbury.
They won the first three of their five group matches to qualify for the next phase of the Super Sixes against Bourneville, Doncaster, Hampstead & Westminster, Ipswich and Olton & West Warwicks in Bristol on Saturday week. But there was no joy at all for Trojans, who leaked an amazing 25 goals in their first two games at Canterbury and went on concede 40 goals in five straight losses, writes Mike Vimpany. It began to go wrong for Trojans from the start, Fareham beating them 10-7 in a goal fest - a result which kick started their quafifying campaign and set the pattern of defeats for the Stoneham side. Fareham went on to beat Devonians Ashmoor 4-1 and Old Loughtonians 5-3 - results which ensured their place in National Division 2 on January 21. Coach Ben Barnes was delighted with Fareham's results. "We were not as strong as last winter, but the squad played some good indoor hockey and qualified with two games to spare," he said. "James Seager scored 10 goals and captained the team very well. Rob Wilson was excellent and Rory Kemp produced some excellent displays in goal." Barnes had a special word for the three Rawlings brothers, Danny, James and Scott, and teenager Will Raymond who, playing his first ever indoor tournament, gained some valuable experience. Fareham lost 6-2 to Ipswich in their fourth match and were heavily beaten 9-0 by all-conquering Hampstead & Westminster in their final game. Trojans took a 15-1 thumping from Hampstead before losing to Ashmoor (5-3), Old Loughtonians (5-3) and Ipswich (5-1).

Fareham look to carry on their encouraging form from last winter's competition, while Trojans qualified (alongside Hampstead & Westminster) from the pre-Christmas regional tournament at Fleming Park. The Hampshire pair are up against Devonians Ashmoor, Old Loughtonians, Hampstead and Ipswich. A top three place guarantees a place in the national Division 2 competition in two weeks time. Trojans women play their Division 2 South matches at Whitgift School, where the Army, Barnes, Cambridge City, Horsham and Sevenoaks provide the two-day opposition. |
