'AJ' is Trojans penalty saving hero

Picture
Angharad Jenkins, best known as 'AJ', was Trojans' penalty saving hero in the 3-2 win over Women's Western Conference high fliers Gloucester City - not once but twice !
Just when it looked as though a scrambled goal from a short corner seven minutes from time by Heather Batten had sealed Trojans the win points, Gloucester City were awarded a late potentially equalising penalty stroke.
But, just as she had done shortly before half-time, 'AJ' out-thought the second Gloucester City flicker and beat out to shot to give Trojans a 3-2 win.
Looking to build on the previous week’s 2-1 win at Swansea, Trojans enjoyed the lion’s share of the early play with Amy Sheehan going close before City Haines gave them a 27th minute lead after some good work down the left by Lauren Anning.
Trojans’ lead didn’t last long. Within two minutes second placed Gloucester City equalised with Charlotte McShane converting a short corner.
Her levelling goal sparked a frenzied pre-interval phase, with Trojans retaking the lead and AJ saving her first penalty stroke.
Gloucester’s own joy lasted only three minutes before Zoe Gittens rifled home a penalty corner drag flick o make it 2-1.
But moments before the half-time whistle Gloucester were awarded a penalty flick for a foul on the goal-line, but AJ dived to the left-hand corner to make a fantastic save and keep Trojans in front at the break.
The second half developed into a midfield battle with Gloucester getting around the back of the Trojans defence and Megan Brazil making it 2-2 on the hour mark.
Again, visiting joy was short lived.
Sheehan won a short corner, Haines whipped the ball through a defender’s legs and Heather Batten applied the finishing touch at the far post.
The drama didn’t stop there.  Five minutes left and Emma Teague was penalised for a stick tackle and Gloucester City were awarded their second penalty stroke.
Even a change in penalty personnel didn’t fool AJ, who moved to her left this time and beat out the stroke – her save securing a dramatic 3-2 win for Trojans, who host Exe at Stoneham lane this Saturday, noon.
