Winchester seconds rounded off their Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division 2 season with a 1-0 win over Wanderers to finish in a satisfactory mid-table position.
Winchester had early chances which fell to Matt Stokes and Stuart Swift and a forced a number of penalty corner blanks before Adam Major slammed home what was to be the winner one minute before the break courtesy of great work down the right from Andy Winnett and Craig Jeffery. The second half started well for Winchester with Winnett and Greg Cox forcing two great saves in quick succession from the Wanderers keeper. For much of the remainder of the half, Wanderers swarmed around the Winchester "D" and whilst, for most part the home team showed discipline in repelling the threat, they were fortunate to survive a couple of self inflicted, heart-stoppers. The final play of the game saw Stuart Swift full clear of the defence, but his one-on-one with the keeper was well saved, not adding to his excellent return of 24 league goals this season. But while Winchester finish the season contented, Southampton are left to sweat on the outcome of the South League play-offs to see whether they will accompany relegated Romsey into the Hampshire League next season. The local pair have both finished their fixtures, fate now resting with issues out of their control in the pyramid above.
